panic

guy from cover of Action Comics #1 stars in Saturday Night Fever
I wish I could say the dude is an homage to guy freaking out on the cover of the very first Action Comics ("why is that man in tights? Why is he lifting a car? why is he wearing a towel like a cape?"), but it's so deeply embedded in my psyche as an image that it's just plain hard to shake.

Panic is a funny word. It started as an adjective modifying words like fear, then became a noun unto its own a little over a century later. Add another several decades, and it becomes a verb.

It's also a good bellweather for the times: the phrase "panic attack" entered the language about 1970.

hmm, maybe I should have saved all this for a comic strip...
