Okay, I know that Tantalus stood in the water, but I couldn't draw him trying to drink without it looking a little too creepy. It occurs to me now why every other image I've seen of him, he's trying to reach for the fruit.

This hit English a little before the 1600's, dating back to sometime in the last decade of the 16th century. Maybe because Greek mythology was getting familiar, and he transcends a specific work? Although Odysseus does run into him in book XI of the Odyssey.
